The Olympics are just around the corner and the team at Weird Fish cannot wait to sit back and catch the Tokyo Olympic games on the telly with a cuppa in hand. The Tokyo Olympics are much overdue and we cannot contain our excitement, so we asked a few members of the team to find out what sports they’re looking forward to watching this Olympic games.
One of the five new sports coming to the Olympics this year, Surfing is the event myself and Alex, our web developer are looking forward to the most. The surfing event will be taking place at Shidashita Beach, Chiba. Scores for the riders will be determined by a panel of judges based off the difficulty of the manoeuvres performed, this includes the speed, power and flow of each move. We think it is going to be gnarly!
Rhi, our lovely photographer, is looking forward to the Water Polo. Rhi’s partner Sam is the captain of a local Water Polo team, therefore, she is looking forward to the event and watching it with her boyfriend and their dog, Crash! Did you know, the first official Water Polo match was played in Crystal Palace Plunge in London.
The first time in history this sport has featured as part of the games, skateboarding is what Emma, our Ecommerce Channel Assistant is looking forward to most. The uyyyyyyyyyc in Tokyo will host the very first skateboarding contest. There will be two elements to the skateboarding, a park and street course. The street course features exactly what you would expect, handrails, curbs, benches that skaters can use to do tricks and boost their scores. What goes in to working out the scores? The type of trick and the difficulty of it, the height, speed, originality and execution are all factors! The park course is reminiscent of the origins of skating, when skating first emerged in Venice Beach, California, skaters used drained swimming pools to skate, in the Olympic arena there will be a smooth bowl with curved steep inclines, that will allow skaters to achieve great height and show off their tricks, like the good old days!
When quizzed on which Olympic event was her favourite out of the men’s or women’s relay, her wonderful words ‘as long as we win, I don’t care’ made it clear, Millie, our Ecommerce Assistant just enjoys the relay, regardless of who ever is running, as long as someone is winning! A relay race consists of multiple runners, running a set distance while pasting a baton to another runner on the team once they have completed their ‘share’ of the distance.

Gymnastics is a great and entertaining sport to watch, with so many events falling under the category of gymnastics, it is no surprise that it is Naomi, our Brand Communications Managers, favourite event. From the men’s artistic gymnastics to women’s and trampolining there is plenty going on in the Summer Olympics. From the talent, skill and training involved in being able to go from bar to beam, floor to vault, we can’t wait to see the athletes compete!
