Hero of the Month November 2019
November 20, 2019
Each month we celebrate the weird and wonderful, from people who are key fundraisers in their community, to people with the coolest jobs. People that go outside the norm, swim against the shoal if you will, and do something fun or extraordinary.
This month we want to show appreciation to someone a bit different, who thinks outside the box, the talented artist Rick Minns, more widely known as Ruddy Muddy.
When did you first start making art with mud on a van?
About 13 years ago. It was to cover up the rude pictures people would draw on my work can so my children didn't see them.
Have you always been artistic?
I have always been able to draw. I loved copying all sorts of pictures when i was younger.
What is your day job?
I work for Flowervision. They are a wholesale company that imports and sells flowers to local florists.
Where do you get your inspiration?
That really varies. Often from a story I hear on the radio while driving. Sometimes they are a request and now and again I just fancy a design I have seen and liked.. :-)
How often do you change up the design?
I do 2-3 designs a week. They usually stay on for a week or so.
What equipment do you need?
I use a couple of soft brushes and a bottle of squirty water...:-)
Is there a special technique to getting the right mud?
Definitely. It needs to hold just enough so that it won't wash off in the rain but I can still easily clean it.
Can you tell us a bit more about your recent charity auction?
What plans do you have for the future, I hear you are looking to do another auction?
I am hoping to do another auction in the New Year. Until then I hope to build a larger portfolio of work and sell some to run the van.
Will there be a whole fleet of Ruddy Muddy vans?
I wish...lol. That would be amazing.
Do you ever do the same design more than once?
I did some of the early ones several times. I tend not to now though.
Do you have a favourite?
Several. Einstein, Stephen Hawking and David Attenborough are up there. Plus a couple I have done to help people as they have been so grateful?
Has anyone ever asked for a design that you weren’t able to do?
Not yet...:-). Sometimes I do have to change a picture a bit so that it works.
Has the BBC1 TV programme changed anything for you?
My social media has gone mad and I am getting several commission request which is fantastic.
What is your ideal weekend?
It is nice when I have an event to do with the van on a Saturday. Then have a little lay in on Sunday before doing some art and maybe going for a drive...:-)
We want to say a big thank you to Rick for being our hero this month, if you want to find out more about Ruddy Muddy art then visit his Facebook Page we can't wait to see what designs he comes up with next.
