Hero of the Moment 7th May 2020
May 07, 2020
“When the night has come, and the land is dark…” Ahem no, sadly we’re not about to break out in harmony, but our next Hero of the Moment has pretty much blown this classic out of the water!
Members of the Essex-based group, Buskerteers Choir, have come together to perform a stirring virtual choral version of Ben E. King’s 1961 song, Stand By Me, in the hope of raising £1 million for the NHS Charities Together coronavirus appeal.
The 150-strong choir, founded by Andrew Small, originally had a mission to raise the money via busking, but lockdown measures in March caused them to change tack. They pledged not to let COVID stop them from singing their hearts out, so virtual rehearsals began.
Each member of the choir recorded Ben E. King’s classic alone in their homes, with Andrew combining their clips to create a unique video. The final version was shared on the group’s Facebook page, alongside an appeal message inviting donations.
Listeners have been encouraged to donate £1 each via Virgin Money Giving, helping fund accommodation, food, travel and counselling for NHS nurses, doctors, staff and volunteers fighting COVID-19.
The Buskerteers Choir’s incredible rendition of Stand By Me has already helped raise over £24,000 in donations, with the emotional video seeing 230,000 shares to date. Come on shoal members – press pause on your Spotify for a few minutes and head to the Buskerteers Choir’s Facebook page to have a listen! https://www.facebook.com/pg/buskerteerschoir/posts/?ref=page_internal
