   The Macaroni™ Story

What is a Macaroni?  A type of pasta usually covered in cheese, a crested Penguin from the Subantarctic or an 18th century English fellow who dressed outlandishly???..to us a Macaroni™ is an individual, hard wearing fleece that is exclusive to Weird Fish.

The original Macaroni™ fabric was developed by Weird Fish back in 1993 at the Ataturk knitting factory in Turkey with our agent and friend Reha Aksoy who still works with us to this day. The fabric didn’t have a name so we christened it Macaroni™ after the pasta it resembles.

Our unique cotton-based Macaronifabric is knitted on circular knitting machines that were made in Germany and Spain in the late 1960’s - only these machines can produce this unique knit. There are very few of these machines left which is what makes the fabric exclusive to Weird Fish and so hard for competitors to emulate, though they continue to try and fail.

Over the years our Macaroni™ fabric has improved to become a firm favourite, renowned for being hard wearing and great value for money. Macaroni™ construction has improved over the years as we have changed the composition to achieve the premium quality it is today whilst eliminating shrinkage and improving performance.

Turkey traditionally produced all of our garments but in 2010 we arranged the purchase of two German machines and relocated them to India to compliment Turkish production.

Our new partners in India have a have a fantastic operation and meet all our green, ethnical and environmental standards.  They are soon to be a Platinum Level Green factory, offsetting up to 90% of emissions through wind, solar and steam power.

At Weird Fish we are keen on promoting sustainable manufacturing and ethical treatment of all workers producing our products. The Indian staff work in a carbon neutral green factory which is fully air conditioned with brand new automated machines with daily meals provided in on site canteens. It’s all part of our on-going policy at Weird Fish to promote the sustainable manufacturing and ethical treatment of all workers producing our products. (Images Below)
